Two weeks ago, House Republicans advanced the One Big Beautiful Bill, which is now under Senate review before potentially reaching President Trump’s desk. This legislation focuses on tax cuts and federal spending reductions, while also aiming to secure the border and reform welfare.

The bill aims to make the 2017 Trump Tax Cuts permanent, with supporters claiming it will result in bigger paychecks and encourage investment within the United States. Additional provisions include eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay, offering extra tax deductions for seniors, and making the Child Tax Credit permanent. The bill also seeks to make the small business deduction permanent.

In terms of welfare reform, the bill mandates that able-bodied adults work at least 80 hours per month or engage in training or volunteering to continue receiving benefits. U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym stated, “Welfare should be a short-term bridge, not a permanent lifestyle.” He emphasized that this measure ensures benefits are directed towards those who truly need them while encouraging personal responsibility.

Some critics argue that the bill could increase the deficit; however, proponents dispute this claim by highlighting Congressional Budget Office estimates showing a reduction in federal spending by over $1.6 trillion.

Border security is another significant component of this legislation. It provides full funding for building a southern border wall and enhancing border security measures without future delays or congressional disagreements.

Rep. Yakym described it as “a bill written by conservatives who listened to voters,” focusing on lower taxes, smaller government, and secure borders. He concluded by emphasizing its respect for American workers’ efforts: “It’s time to give some back.”

U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym represents Indiana’s 2nd Congressional District as a Republican member of Congress.
