Nate Schwitzenberg was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, according to an announcement by the league on April 14.
Schwitzenberg’s recognition comes after a strong defensive performance that helped Notre Dame defeat top-ranked North Carolina. The Fighting Irish held North Carolina to a season-low five goals in Saturday’s game, which ended with a score of 10-5 between two of the nation’s highest-ranked teams. Only two of those five goals came during settled six-on-six possessions.
During the match, Schwitzenberg limited Tar Heel Dom Pietramala to just one goal, which occurred during an extra-man opportunity. He also recorded a caused turnover and picked up a ground ball. The Notre Dame defense, anchored by Schwitzenberg, has now kept six out of nine opponents to single-digit goal totals this season—all resulting in victories.
Looking ahead, Notre Dame will conclude its road schedule against Duke University on Saturday. The team is set to face No. 16/15 Duke at Koskinen Stadium in Durham at noon Eastern Time. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
The continued success of Notre Dame’s defense has played a key role in their strong season and could impact their standing as they approach postseason play.
