Notre Dame infielder Noah Coy has taken on a leading role for the Fighting Irish during his sophomore season, according to an April 16 announcement. Following the graduation of 13 players and the departure of former shortstop Estevan Moreno to the MLB Draft, Coy moved from second base to become the team’s starting shortstop.
The shift comes after significant roster changes left openings in key positions. Coy said he was aware of what was required: “Going into the summer, I realized the steps I needed to take and the at-bats I needed to get experience-wise. I just wanted to go prove that I belonged, and I think I had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder to prove that too.”
Coy spent his summer playing in the Northwoods League, where he achieved a .363 batting average with 41 runs batted in over 52 games. Entering his sophomore year at Notre Dame, he became comfortable returning to shortstop—a position he played in high school—and embraced a leadership role among younger teammates. “It’s a special position to me, and I feel most comfortable there,” Coy said. “With a lot of the young guys in the infield, I can take that leadership role and help guide as many people as I can.”
Throughout this season, Coy has made notable contributions both offensively and defensively. He started strong by hitting .667 with eight runs scored and three RBI through three games at the Holiday Inn Classic. In subsequent series against Duke, Louisville, and North Carolina—major Atlantic Coast Conference opponents—Coy continued producing at high levels including multiple home runs and RBIs.
Coy currently holds a .325 batting average for coach Shawn Stiffler’s squad while leading Notre Dame in triples (3), walks (26), and stolen bases (9). Reflecting on his progress since last year when he played behind upperclassmen, Coy said: “I’m just trying to be the same guy every day. Just playing with that chip on my shoulder and trying to have something to prove every time I’m out there.”
Looking ahead, Coy aims to continue his strong performance as Notre Dame travels next weekend for an away series against No. 8 Florida State.
