The Notre Dame baseball team lost to No. 13 Virginia, 20-5, in the deciding game of their three-game series on April 12 at Frank Eck Stadium.
The result ended the weekend with Virginia taking two out of three games from Notre Dame. The loss leaves the Irish with a record of 16-15 overall and a conference mark of 7-11 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Virginia scored first, but Notre Dame responded in the bottom half of the opening inning with Mark Quatrani reaching base and Bino Watters singling. Mason Barth drove in Quatrani for one run, and Jayce Lee added a sacrifice fly to give Notre Dame an early lead. Virginia answered quickly, putting up three runs in the second inning and another in the third for a 5-2 advantage.
Notre Dame cut into that lead when Barth walked and Lee hit a home run to right field, making it a one-run game at 5-4. However, Virginia pulled away by scoring four runs in the fourth inning and continued adding runs through each subsequent frame until reaching twenty total by game’s end.
For Notre Dame offensively, Jayce Lee went one-for-three with a two-run homer and another RBI. Watters collected two hits and scored once; Barth had an RBI single along with a walk; Brandon Logan went one-for-two with a run scored; while Quatrani also crossed home plate during the contest.
Dylan Singleton took the pitching loss after working just over two innings. Several other pitchers made appearances for Notre Dame throughout what became an eight-inning game due to scoring margin rules.
Notre Dame will next play Valparaiso at Frank Eck Stadium on Tuesday as they take a break from conference play.
