The Notre Dame baseball team lost to No. 22 Boston College by a score of 16-1 in an eight-inning game on Saturday afternoon, April 25.
The result marks a setback for the Irish as they continue their season and compete within the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Notre Dame started strong with a double play in the first inning and Xavier Hirsch retiring the side in order during the second. However, Boston College took control with four runs in the third inning. Caden Crowell came on in relief and struck out two batters to end that threat. The Irish got on the scoreboard in the sixth when Noah Coy singled, Mark Quatrani added another single, and Dylan Passo drove Coy home with a fielder’s choice.
Radek Birkholz threw a shutout seventh inning for Notre Dame before Boston College extended its lead by scoring ten runs in the eighth. Offensively, Dylan Passo went one-for-three with an RBI while Noah Coy was one-for-four with a run scored. Bino Watters and Parker Brzustewicz each contributed hits as well.
On the mound, Xavier Hirsch started for Notre Dame, pitching three-and-a-third innings and striking out one batter while taking the loss. Caden Crowell struck out six over two-and-two-thirds innings of relief work, and Radek Birkholz recorded a strikeout during his shutout inning. Aiden Zerr, Chase Van Ameyde, Garrett Snyder, and Evan Clark also saw action for Notre Dame; Clark registered a strikeout against his only batter faced.
With this loss, Notre Dame moves to an overall record of 19-19 (8-15 ACC). The team will look to win the series rubber match against No. 22 Boston College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
