Notre Dame defeated No. 1 Richmond by a score of 12-8 on April 4 at the Lacrosse Day in Chicago event held at Martin Stadium, handing Richmond its first loss of the season and improving to a record of 7-1.
The win is significant as it marks Notre Dame’s continued strong performance against highly ranked opponents. The Irish are now 6-5 when playing the No. 1 team in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll at the time of the matchup, including six wins in their last seven games against top-ranked teams.
Faceoff specialist Tyler Spano played a key role for Notre Dame, winning 16 out of 22 faceoffs and collecting nine ground balls along with an assist. Luke Miller led all scorers with four goals and an assist, while Josh Yago contributed three goals and an assist. Will Maheras and Brock Behrman also recorded multiple points each.
Goalkeeper Thomas Ricciardelli made twelve saves while allowing eight goals. The Irish defense limited Richmond to just eight goals, tying their season low for scoring.
Notre Dame took control early by scoring eight unanswered goals in the first quarter, including two quick strikes from Chris Reinhardt and Miller within the opening minute. Despite a push from Richmond that cut into their lead, Notre Dame maintained momentum with timely responses from Yago—who completed his hat trick before halftime—and additional contributions from Miller and Dylan Faison.
With this victory, Notre Dame improved its all-time series record against Richmond to three wins and one loss. The team has now won fifty-two consecutive games when holding opponents to fewer than ten goals—a streak dating back to the 2019 season.
Looking ahead, Notre Dame will return home to Arlotta Stadium for a match against No. 2 North Carolina on Saturday, April 11.
