The University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish recently received a signed commitment from Sonia Citron, a 6'1" guard from Scarsdale, New York.

Citron was the second five-star commitment from the class of 2021 for women's basketball Head Coach Niele Ivey, according to coverage by Sports Illustrated.

"So blessed and excited to announce my commitment to the University of Notre Dame," Citron recently posted to Twitter. "Thank you to everyone that has helped me along the way. I wouldn't be where I am today without you. Go Irish."

Ranked 16th overall in her class and sixth in her position, Citron recently led the The Ursuline School Koalas to a 24-0 record and their first Section I title since 2003, according to the university's signing day website

In the 2019-2020 season, Citron averaged 23.8 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 4.3 assists and 2.9 blocks per game, according to the signing day page.

Citron received a number of recognitions for her 2019-2020 performance, including Most Valuable Player in the Section I Class AA Tournament prior to the cancelation of the 2020 State Finals due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the signing day page. She was also named the 2020 New York State Gatorade Player of the Year, the 2020 New York State Sportswriters Association Class AA Player of the Year and the 2020 Section I Girls Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year.

"Notre Dame checked all the boxes for me: great academic school, great women's basketball program, beautiful campus and wonderful facilities," Citron was quoted in the post.

Citron said she was drawn by the leadership Ivey gives to the team, as well as the team itself.

"I love their passion, energy, knowledge of the game and their style of play," she said. "I am looking forward to learning, competing, growing as a person and winning championships at Notre Dame."
