July 13, 2023 — The City of South Bend Department of Public Works is installing nearly 100 speed humps in 24 neighborhoods across the city. This is part of a comprehensive strategy developed by Public Works after receiving concerns from residents and neighborhood organizations across the city in recent years. Earlier this year, engineers held public meetings to discuss the Traffic Calming Plan with area residents. The installation of speed humps is underway and is expected to be completed by November.  

Speed humps are one of several traffic calming measures used to reduce vehicle speeds and create safer streets. Although most neighborhoods have a posted speed limit of 30 mph or lower, many drivers frequently speed through these residential streets. As part of its strategy, Public Works selected locations for the speed humps based on a number of criteria including traffic volume and crash data. Due to over 300 unique traffic calming requests from across the city, a scoring and ranking system is used to prioritize projects in each Council district.  

To keep residents in the loop, the City has developed a traffic calming dashboard that shows the locations of the speed humps. Residents can also view the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Plan and make a request for traffic calming at southbendin.gov/trafficcalming.
