Von Thun Selected As NAIA All-American Honorable Mention

Von Thun Selected As NAIA All-American Honorable Mention

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) recently announced their 2022 Men's Soccer All-American awards. Holy Cross College's Martin Von Thun was awarded Honorable Mentions All-America. He is the first men's soccer player in program history to earn this honor. Von Thun was also named to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference First-Team, earlier this fall.

Von Thun, originally from Grimma, Germany, is a sophomore defender on the men's soccer team. He appeared and started in all 19 matches for the Saints. With Von Thun anchoring the back line, Holy Cross would only allow 21 goals scored against on the season. Martin also recorded seven points on the year, with two goals scored of his own and three assists.

Behind Von Thun, the Saints finished with a 10-5-4 overall record, while going 7-1-4 in conference play. Men's soccer defeated Judson University at home in the opening round of the CCAC tournament, before falling to Olivet Nazarene University.

Men's soccer head coach Omar Gallo's thoughts:

"First, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate not only Martin but our entire men's soccer program. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our program and shows the caliber of players we can attract to Holy Cross College.

Martin, only being a sophomore has come a long way. What impresses me the most about Martin is his maturity level off the field. It's not often we name a sophomore a captain, but there are reasons why we did with him. Off the field he's been a great ambassador, not only the program, but more importantly the college.

On the field, he's grown so much, especially with the help of his teammates and Kamoy Creary who plays right beside him in the back line. Martin has become one of our most confident players on the pitch, who will always put the team first. As a sophomore, there's nothing more you can ask from him.

We are excited and proud of Martin and the entire team. I would also like to give a special shout out to coach Duma Magagula and Br. James Kozak for helping shape Martin both on and off the field."
