Construction is set to begin Thursday, June 8 on extending the Stephen J. Luecke Coal Line Trail from the Angela Bridge over the St. Joseph River to State Road 933. The trail will follow the former railroad right-of-way, which lies behind houses on the north side of Angela Boulevard and continues east until it meets up with the newly established 933 Trail. No street closures are planned for this project, which is expected to be completed by May 2024.

The work listed above is in addition to construction currently underway to convert the old Coal Line railroad bridge over the St. Joseph River, just north of Angela Boulevard, into a pedestrian bridge. Construction on the bridge began in January and is also expected to be completed in May 2024.

The first phase of the Coal Line Trail, which goes from Lincolnway West to Angela Boulevard, was opened in November 2022 and renamed the Stephen J. Luecke Coal Line Trail. A future phase will continue the trail south of Lincolnway West to the new Martin Luther King, Jr. “Dream Center” on Linden Avenue.

Once completed the entire Coal Line Trail will be a 2-mile dedicated urban biking and walking path in the heart of South Bend.
